Emissions Label Areas

Certain areas of the emissions label contain important information using diagrams, codes, and written information. Some of this information will be entered into the analyzer.

Area 1

Area 1 contains engine information in the form of codes. Beginning in 1981, this ‘Engine Family Code’ is a set of 12 letters and numbers. The formatting of Area 1 has changed over the years, with distinctive changes occurring in 1993, 1994, and 1998 which is its current format.

Area 2

Area 2 contains the vehicle certification statement and model year. This label will indicate where the vehicle is designed to operate. California compliance information is located in Area 2. If Area 2 appears altered, double-check the model year using the vehicle’s VIN number and a reference book.

Area 3

Area 3 contains vehicle catalyst information. This area indicates if the vehicle was equipped with a catalyst from the factory. Some manufacturers use Area 3 to list additional emissions information.

Area 4

Area 4 is the vacuum hose routing diagram. This diagram indicates the proper location for vacuum hoses throughout the engine and emissions control system.

These 4 areas on the emissions label should be intact and easy to read. If they are damaged or missing, select ‘Label Missing’ on the analyzer. If the label is not in English, or the vehicle has a 17-digit VIN number, the vehicle is likely from a foreign country. If the vehicle has a 17-digit VIN number, contact the Emissions Lab to verify that the vehicle meets United States emissions standards.
